Pulsars are often referred to as the “l(fā)ighthouse in the universe”. It is a typical compact object in our universe, which is the product of a massive star at the end of its life. A pulsar is actually a neutron star with its name associated with the periodic signals it sends out. Pulsars are characterized by high spinning rate, small volume, high density, and ultra-strong magnetic fields. It emits energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation. If its radio beam sweeps past our Earth, it can be detected by scientists. The discovery and related researches of pulsars have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics twice.

The overall design of this exhibit is based on the lighthouse, embodying the “cosmic lighthouse” that pulsars often symbolize. You can find out the pulsars that we have discovered so far in real time, many “firsts” in pulsar discoveries, and “l(fā)isten” to more than 100 actual pulsars at different spinning rates. The most interesting thing is that you can actually control the spinning rate of the central pulsar on display.
